Explain the Function of that Cell Part Clearly
This science revision note aims to help your child
– identify the relevant cell part
– proper scientific keywords to explain the concepts clearly.
But before you read on, you might want to download this entire revision notes in PDF format to print it out for your child, or to read it later.

The diagram below shows Cell B and Cell C.
Which cell(s) would allow characteristics to be passed down from parents to children? Explain your answer.
STEP 1
How are characteristics passed down from parents to children?
Characteristics are passed down from parents to children through genetic information.
STEP 2
Which part of the cell contains genetic information?
The nucleus.
STEP 3
Do cells B and C contain a nucleus? Label all the parts in both cells to figure this out.
Yes, both Cell B and Cell C contain a nucleus. See the cell parts below.
Note:
Take note of how we label the cell wall and the cell membrane. The line must be pointing correct part of the cell.
The vacuole is not tested in the PSLE. The function of the vacuole is to temporarily store food, water and minerals
FINALLY, put your answer together
Question: Which cell(s) would allow characteristics to be passed down from parents to children.
Answer: Both Cell B and Cell C contain the nucleus. Genetic information containing the characteristics are passed down from the parents to the children.
Note
For a complete answer, the cell part AND the function of that cell part must be explained here.
Finally, always link back to the question.
We don’t recommend this
Incomplete answer: Both Cell B and Cell C would allow characteristics to be passed down from parents to children because both cells contain a nucleus, which passes down characteristics from parents to children.
This answer is incomplete as you did not mention how the nucleus passes down characteristics from parents to children. You have to specify that characteristics are passed down through genetic information and that this genetic information is found in the nucleus of cells.
