P5 Science

Human Body as a System

This science revision note aims to help your child understand the human body as a system topic.

Take note of how the human body systems work together (and how examiners test your understanding of this topic).

You would’ve noticed the P5 topic of the respiratory system is combined with the P3/P4 topic of human body system.

But before you read on, you might want to download this entire revision notes in PDF format to print it out for your child, or to read it later.

Question 1:

[From the Anglo Chinese School (Primary) P5 2022 SA2 Q36)]

The diagrams show the respiratory systems of a human and a fish.

(a) Name organs X and Y of the human and fish respiratory system. State how the structures covered with many blood vessels in the human and fish respiratory system help in the absorption of oxygen.

STEP 1: Recall

Identify the keywords in the questions:

  • Respiratory system
  • Many blood vessels

STEP 2: What Science topics are tested?

1. Recognise and identify the different parts of the respiratory system.

2. Name the functions of the various parts of the respiratory system.

Human

  • Lungs: carry out gaseous exchange with the surrounding
  • Windpipe: connects the nose to the lungs and allows air to flow to and from the lungs

Fish

  • Gills: numerous filaments to increase the surface area for the exchange of gases

Refer to this video:

Step 3: Piecing your answer together

(a) Name organs X and Y of the human and fish respiratory system. State how the structures covered with many blood vessels in the human and fish respiratory system help in the absorption of oxygen.

Answer

X is the lung while Y is the gill. Numerous blood vessels help to increase the surface area of contact between the blood and oxygen to increase the rate of absorption of oxygen.

(b) Describe how oxygen in the environment reaches the blood vessels of the human respiratory system.

STEP 1: Recall

Identify the keywords:

  • Oxygen in environment
  • Blood vessels

This topic is testing on the path that oxygen travels after being taken in.

STEP 2: What Science topics are tested?

1. Recognise the path that oxygen takes.

Nose –> Windpipe –> Lung –> Blood

Refer to this video:

STEP 3: Piecing your answer together

(b) Describe how oxygen in the environment reaches the blood vessels of the human respiratory system.

Answer

The oxygen in the surroundings enters the nose and down the windpipe. The oxygen then enters the lungs and is absorbed into the blood vessels.

Common mistake:

Wrong answer: The oxygen enters the nose and is absorbed into the blood vessels.

That answer is incomplete. You need to outline the full path that oxygen takes.

Question 2:

[From the Anglo-Chinese School (Primary) P3 2022 SA2 Q29)]

Study the diagrams of organ systems of the human body.

(a) Name organ systems T and U. Label the part in system U that protects the heart.

STEP 1: Recall

Identify the keywords:

  • System
  • Organ

Recall the differences between an organ and a system.

STEP 2: What Science topics are tested?
1. Recognise the systems and their functions.

  • Muscular system: pull on bones to move different parts of the body.

  • Circulatory system: transport substances in the blood around the body.
  • Skeletal system: gives the body its shape and protects vital organs

2. Identify the functions of various parts of the body system.

    • Skull: Protects the brain
    • Ribcage: Protects the heart and the lungs
    • Heart: To pump blood to various parts of the body

Refer to this video:

STEP 3: Piecing your answer together

(a) Name organ systems T and U. Label the part in system U that protects the heart.

Answer

T: muscular system

U: skeletal system

(b) Tick the correct statement that shows the similarity in functions between system U and the stem of a plant

STEP 1: Recall

Identify the keywords:

  • Similarity
  • System U of human vs stem of plant

STEP 2: What Science topics are tested?

Refer to the part (a)

STEP 3: Piecing your answer together

(b) Tick the correct statement that shows the similarity in functions between system U and the stem of a plant

Answer

Statement 1: Both work together with the muscular system

Plants do not have a muscular system. Therefore, this statement is not correct.

Statement 2: Both support and keep the living thing upright

This statement is correct. The skeletal system supports the body and gives the body its shape. The stem holds the plants upright, allowing the leaf to reach towards the sun to obtain maximum sunlight.

Statement 3: Both absorb water to keep the living thing alive

The skeletal system does not absorb water, neither does the stem. The root absorbs water and mineral salts from the soil.
